Valerie Cassel is a co-curator of the 2000 Whitney Biennial along with Maxwell L. Anderson, Michael Auping, Hugh M. Davies, Jane Farver, Andrea Miller-Keller, and Lawrence R. Rinder. This year’s biennial marks the first major American survey of contemporary art to feature current developments in internet art. There are nine internet artists among the ninety-seven artists chosen for the exhibition. More traditional media such as painting, sculpture, installation, and photography will be shown, as well as film and video.

Cassel has been the director of the Visiting Artists Program at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago since 1995, and she was previously a program specialist at the National Endowment for the Arts (1988 95). She earned a BA at University of Texas, Austin, and an MA at Howard University, Washington, D.C.
