Sergio Vega’s most recent work Modernismo Tropical stems from his investigation in Brazil of a 17th century theory that the Garden of Eden was located in South America. Modernismo Tropical elaborates on that experience by humorously juxtaposing post-industrial and pre-modern realities to examine urbanization and colonialism. Vega’s work has been exhibited at The Second Johannesburg Biennale, South Africa; The Kwanju Biennale 2000, Korea; The 5th Biennale of Lyon, France; SITE Santa Fe, New Mexico; Sonsbeek 9, the Netherlands; and the Yokohama Triennale 2001, Japan. Vega attended the Whitney Museum Independent Study Program and received an MFA from Yale.
