Richard Francis joined the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, in fall 1992 as the museum’s James W. Alsdorf Chief Curator. Since arriving at the MCA, he has organized two major exhibitions: Radical Scavengers: Conceptual Vernacular in Recent American Art and Under Development: Dreaming the MCA’s Collection, which was a look at how the history of art might be presented in the museum’s new building slated to open in 1996.

Francis came to the MCA after twelve years as associate curator of the Tate Gallery in England. He also served as the founding curator of the Tate Gallery in Liverpool. He has organized exhibitions of work by Julian Schnabel, Jennifer Bartlett, Scott Burton, Richard Deacon, and a major retrospective of the work of Francis Bacon, producing catalogues or books for each of these exhibitions. He received a BFA from Cambridge University and an MA from the Courtauld Institute of Art, London.
