Nina Katchadourian (born 1968) is a multi-media artist based in Brooklyn. Her work is often marked by an intrinsic sense of humor, as in the recent Lavatory Self-Portraits in the Flemish Style,  a collection of 15th-century Flemish-style self-portraits taken in the lavatories of planes, from the series Seat Assignment (2010 and ongoing). In The Genealogy of the Supermarket (2005), she organized the images of common brand characters found on grocery store products into a family tree so that they all appear to be inter-related. Processes such as collecting and sorting are operative in many of Katchadourian s projects. Her Sorted Books series of photographs (1993 and ongoing) captures short phrases on book spines which she created by re-ordering books in libraries and personal book collections. In her talk, Katchadourian will present a variety of past, ongoing, and new projects.

Katchadourian has had solo exhibitions at the Turku Art Museum, Finland; the Frances Young Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery, Saratoga Springs, New York; the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego; and the Dunedin Public Art Gallery, New Zealand, where she was an artist-in-residence. Her work has been featured at MoMA PS1, New York; Serpentine Galleries, London; Saatchi Gallery, London; Turner Contemporary in Margate, Kent, England; Artists Space, New York; SculptureCenter, New York; and the Palais de Tokyo, Paris. She recently completed “Grand State of Maine,” a permanent public piece commissioned by the GSA for a border crossing station between the US and Canada. In April 2013, a monograph of Sorted Books was published by Chronicle Books, marking the 20th anniversary of Katchadourian’s project of the same title. Katchadourian is on the faculty at NYU Gallatin School of Individualized Study and she is represented by Catharine Clark Gallery in San Francisco.
