Matthew Buckingham (born 1963) makes films and photographs that examine locations, monuments, and historical events. His 16mm film A Man of the Crowd (2003) is modeled on an Edgar Allan Poe story of a similar title. It is projected through a small opening in the gallery wall onto a free-standing two-way mirror that echoes a cafe window from the film. Buckingham’s highly visceral film work engages the viewer both perceptually and physically.

A Man of the Crowd is included in the exhibition Universal Experience: Art, Life and the Tourist’s Eye, which is on view at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago from February 12 through June 5, 2005. Buckingham has had solo exhibitions at Murray Guy, New York; the Institute of Visual Arts, Milwaukee; the National Art Museum, Copenhagen; and the Moderna Museet, Stockholm.
