Laylah Ali’s paintings resemble comic-book serials, but they also contain stylistic references to hieroglyphics and American folk-art traditions. Although her interest in representations of sociopolitical issues and current events drives her work, her finished paintings rarely reveal specific references. Ali (born 1968) has held solo exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Institute of Contemporary Art, Boston; the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; the Contemporary Art Museum, St. Louis; and the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art, North Adams; among others. She received a BA from Williams College and an MFA from Washington University in St. Louis.
