Voices: Jo Hormuth
Gallery 400
400 South Peoria Street
Jo Hormuth (born 1955) employs humor as an essential aspect in her work. Clever, funny, intriguing, and conceptually based, she addresses such issues as sexuality and gender, women and the body, or explores the role of the viewer and issues of voyeurism. Hormuth has held solo exhibitions at I Space, Tough Gallery, and the Evanston Arts Center, and she has exhibited in group shows at the Chicago Cultural Center, Zolla/Lieberman Gallery, Randolph Street Gallery, and Columbia College, among many others. Hormuth will have a one-person show at Tough Gallery in October 1995 and was recently asked to create an installation in April in Israel with the international artists collective Artist Museum.
Hormuth received a BFA from Grand Valley State College, Michigan, and an MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She founded the company Chicago Architectural Arts, with her husband, John Phillips, which executes restoration and conservation of historic interiors.
