Architect and theoretician Jennifer Bloomer discusses her upcoming book A Longing for Gravity. Nostalgia is, as the author maintains, a nineteenth-century disease that threatens modern architecture. Her polemic poses many questions relating to the basic philosophy of design and the problem of the “new” becoming quickly outmoded.

Bloomer’s other publications include Body, Memory, and Architecture (Yale University Press, 1978) and Architecture and the Text: The (S)crypts of Joyce and Piranesi (Yale University Press, 1995). She is a principal of Jennifer Bloomer/Robert Segrest Architecture in Athens, Georgia.
