Curator and art historian Helen Molesworth will discuss her recent exhibition and collection of essays, Work Ethic, which explores the nature of “work” in works of art. In Work Ethic Molesworth highlights the trajectory of “dematerialiazation” of both object and process. Since the 1960s, artists from Allan Kaprow and Yoko Ono to Andy Warhol and Richard Serra opted for a new “ethic” that collapsed the traditional notions of art making and responded to the changes in the post-industrial context. Work Ethic is on view at the Baltimore Museum of Art through early-January and will travel to the Des Moines Art Center (summer 2004) and the Wexner Center for the Arts (fall 2004).

Helen Molesworth is chief curator of exhibitions at the Wexner Center for the Arts in Columbus, OH.  Previously she was Curator of Contemporary Art at the Baltimore Museum of Art, Director and Curator of the Amelie A. Wallace Gallery at the State University of New York at Old Westbury, and a member of the education staff at the Whitney Museum of American Art. A widely published writer and scholar, Helen is co-founding editor of Documents, a contemporary visual culture magazine. She holds a PhD in art history from Cornell University and is currently a visiting instructor at Bard College’s Center for Curatorial Studies.
