Dan Devening (born 1958) juxtaposes figuration and abstraction in his paintings. Speaking of Devening’s recent exhibition at the Chicago Cultural Center, Sue Taylor claimed, “a master of artifice and ambiguity, [he] brings a playful attitude to painting. realism and abstraction are modes he juggles at will, often within the same picture, assigning each zone its own style and subject.”

Devening has exhibited extensively all over Illinois, and has also shown in New Mexico, Iowa, and Nebraska. He has received awards from the Illinois Arts Council, Arts Midwest, Art Matters, and the Chicago Community Arts Assistance Program. Devening has taught painting and drawing at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago since 1988 and is currently teaching at Northwestern University. He received a BFA from the University of Nebraska, Omaha, and an MFA from the School of Art and Design at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
