Candida Alvarez (born 1955) draws on her cultural experience as a second generation Puerto Rican woman growing up in the United States. Her simple and direct way of working the color and imagery-laden surfaces of her polyptych canvases is at once a process of juxtaposition as much as a conjuring from an unconscious, imaginary world of vision. The imagery of dreams, memories, and objects in peripheral vision populates her paintings. Mystery and humor inform the narrative content of her work, of which she has said “It is my intention to continue working toward evoking memory as a site from which to examine the internal structure of experience.”

Her work has been exhibited widely at such institutions as MoMA PS1, the Brooklyn Museum, the Queens Museum, the Bronx Museum of the Arts, and the New Britain Museum of American Art. Alvarez is currently teaching at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in the department of drawing and painting. She received a BA from Fordham University and an MFA in painting from Yale University.
