A Drinking Song for the Year of our Lord 2022
(based on Ubu Roi by Alfred Jarry)
By Henry Wishcamper
Directed by Yasen Peyankov
In 1606, William Shakespeare wrote Macbeth, a searing examination of the dark heart of a would-be autocrat. In 1896, Alfred Jarry took Macbeth and turned it on its head to create Ubu Roi, a comedy so shocking that it caused rioting in the streets of Paris after its only public performance. In 2019, Henry Wishcamper took Macbeth and Ubu Roi and jammed them together to create Pshitter! A Drinking Song for the Year of our Lord 2020, a mash-up that is as absurd, grotesque, tragic and cruel as the turbulent times we are living through. Now adapted to the topsy-turvy year of 2022, Pshitter! explores the world-wide fascination with autocracy. And don’t forget—“fair is foul, and foul is fair!”, witches!
