Joachim Sauter (born 1959) studied graphic design and film at the German Film and Television Academy, Berlin. Fueled by his interest in personal computers as a medium, Sauter founded Art+Com in 1988 together with other designers, artists, scientists, and technicians. Their goal was to conduct practical research and evangelize for a new technologically driven medium in the realm of art and design. Today, Art+Com continues to work in an interdisciplinary manner, developing projects for cultural institutions, industry, and the science community, alongside projects devised for themselves. Sauter has participated in exhibitions at Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam; the Venice Biennale; and the InterCommunication Center, Tokyo, among other places. Since 1991 he has served as Professor of Interaction Design at the Berlin University of the Arts, and has been an Adjunct Professor in the Design Media Arts Department at University of California, Los Angeles since 2001.
