Donald Lipski (born 1947) has made the small sculptures that comprise Gathering Dust since he was a child, and continues to make them today. He assembles objects that are characteristically combined and altered in a type of surrealist juxtaposition. Bent straws, bits of wire, twine, cigarette butts, scraps of paper, broken rubber bands, clumps of fuzz, and an entire universe of materials have been twisted, bent, and assembled into little, intimate, and elegant formal studies. This ongoing project, its materials and presentation, establish installation art s potential for existing closer to real life than to fine art” a pure invention of creative form. Lipski has exhibited his work at the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Fort Worth Art Museum; Pittsburgh Center for the Arts; Portland Center for the Visual Arts; Rhona Hoffman Gallery, Chicago; Margo Leavin Gallery, Los Angeles; and Dorothy Golden Gallery, Santa Monica, as well as P.B. van Voorst van Beest Gallery, The Hague, Netherlands; Edward Totah Gallery, London; Galerie Pierre Huber, Geneva, Switzerland; and Anders Tornberg Gallery, Lund, Sweden. He received a BA from the University of Wisconsin, Madison, and an MFA in ceramics from Cranbrook Academy of Art.
