Bruce Caines (born 1959) is an African American photographer whose book Our Common Ground will be released by Crown Publishers this month. Through powerful photographic portraits and illuminating narratives, Caines reflects a radiant light that shines within Black America. The book is about positive alternatives for Black youth, self-esteem, and the idea that “the best role models are people who live and work beside us every day, and that each child has the potential to make tremendous contributions.” People featured in the book range from an astrophysicist, to a team of community activists in Los Angeles, to a woman in Harlem who works as a stone mason.
This lecture is supported by the School of Art and Design and the African American Cultural Center at the University of Illinois at Chicago and the Marwen Foundation.
