Photographer Duane Michals (born 1932) explores literary and philosophical ideas about death, gender, and sexuality. Working with staged scenes, he experiments with multiple exposures, sequences, and combining text and drawings in his images. His publications include Sequences (Doubleday, 1970), The journey of the spirit after death (Winter House, 1971), Chance meeting; photographs (A. & J. Wilde, 1973), Take one and see Mt. Fujiyama, and other stories (Light Impressions, 1976), Real dreams: photostories (Addison House, 1976), Merveilles d’Egypt (Deno l-Filipacchi, 1978), A visit with Magritte (Matrix, 1981), Duane Michals (Thames and Hudson, 1983), and Duane Michals: photographs, sequences, texts, 1958-1984 (Museum of Modern Art, 1984). He received a BA from the University of Denver, Colorado and studied at the Parsons School of Design, New York.
