Allan deSouza (born 1958) is a Kenyan-born, South Asian artist and writer whose works address questions of the body in relation to the nation. His work has been exhibited at the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Baguio Arts Festival, Philippines; and Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris. He has exhibited at the Pomona College Museum of Art, Claremont, CA; Talwar Gallery, New York; Art in General, New York; and Susanne Vielmetter Projects, Los Angeles. His writing has appeared in various catalogues, journals, and anthologies, including Third Text, Amerasia Journal, and X-TRA, for which he is an editor and regular columnist. In the fall of 2005, he served as a Visiting Artist at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.
For this lecture, deSouza discussed examples ranging from photographs of constructed landscapes and cityscapes to sculptures that incorporate bodily materials such as blood and semen, and performances including his public appearances as John Lennon.
