Alison Saar (born 1956) studied art and art history, African, Latin American, and Caribbean art and religion in particular, which gives her work a multicultural approach. In the 1980s, she began making sculptures and room installations that focused on the cultural theme of the African diaspora. Saar continues to explore spiritual themes in her work today. She received a BA from Scripps College, Claremont, and an MFA from the Otis Art Institute, Los Angeles.
