Voices: Peter Hutton
Gallery 400
400 South Peoria Street
Gallery 400 is pleased to host Peter Hutton for an artist talk and screening of his films Lodz Symphony, Study of a River, and Skagafjordur. Hutton (b. 1944, Detroit) is an experimental filmmaker known for his cinematic portraits of city and landscape. A former merchant seaman, Hutton has spent nearly forty years traveling the world to create the many films of his oeuvre. Hutton’s experience at sea changed the way he understands time and place. His films forgo the use of narrative and instead are meditative explorations of place and time, evoking a more reflective way of observing the world.
Hutton studied painting, sculpture and film at the San Francisco Art Institute. Since 1989, he has been the director of the Film and Electronic Arts Program at Bard College. He has taught at CalArts, Hampshire College, Harvard University and SUNY Purchase. Hutton’s films are distributed by Canyon Cinema in San Francisco, and his works have been included in numerous Whitney Biennials (1985, 1991, 1995, 2004). In May 2008, the Museum of Modern Art in New York held a full retrospective of Hutton’s films. His most recent work, Three Landscapes, premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2013. He has received grants from the National Endowment for the Arts, DAAD Berliner, Rockefeller Foundation, Dutch Film Critics Award, and the Guggenheim Fellowship.</
