In his delicately realistic paintings, New York-based artist Cheyney Thompson (born 1975) challenges both the preconceived notions of visual organization and the presumed parameters for painting through a focus on quotidian objects. By juxtaposing everyday items and references to art history, Thompson s work presents new strategies for considering the complexities of society. He is also an editor of Scorched Earth, a magazine that questions drawing s place in theory and practice through dialogue with artists, critics, and historians.

Thompson studied at Harvard University and L Ecole Nationale-Superieur Des Beaux-Arts, Paris. He obtained a BFA from School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston in 1997. His work has been included in group exhibitions such as Greater New York at MoMA PS1, New York, and Biennale di Venezia, 2003. He has been the subject of solo exhibitions at Daniel Buchholz Gallery, Cologne, Germany; Raucci/Santamaria Gallery, Naples, Italy; Andrew Kreps Gallery, New York; and Sutton Lane, London. Currently, Thompson is on the faculty at Milton Avery Graduate School of the Arts, Bard College, New York.
